Potty training your new pup

1. DO NOT DISCIPLINE YOUR PUPPY. It is inevitable your puppy will have multiple accidents in your home. The last thing you want is the puppy to urinate when he/she is in trouble. It will happen. Dogs are very sensitive at a young age and one hard scare can scar the dog for life. 
2. Make sure you keep your puppy on a regular feeding schedule and pay attention to potty trends. Typically a puppy will potty right after they eat drink or sleep. You will need to take your puppy outside to potty after all of those events followed by a reward. Dogs catch on very fast to positive reinforcement. I have had puppies in the past potty outside regardless of if they had to go or not, but they wanted the reward in return.
3. Take your puppy potty in the same location every time. The puppy will smell the scent from the last time and instincts will kick in. It will also keep your puppy from getting distracted by new smells and such.
4. Crate train your puppy. If you buy the right size crate, the puppy will not potty in it. If your puppy is still going potty in the crate, odds are the crate is too large or the puppy is being left in the crate for far too long. 
5. Recognize your puppies behavior before they potty. Typically a puppy will smell around, walk in circles, bark or whine if they need to potty. In this case you can pay attention to your puppies behavior and when these signs are spotted, immediately pick the puppy up and take the puppy outside.
